<p><strong>2. Stuffing Down The Fear</strong></p>
<p>I came to understand at a young age that it&#039;s not socially acceptable to admit you&#039;re scared.  We&#039;re taught to hide our fears.  Be a brave little boy or girl.  I was conditioned to stuff down my fears.  &#034;Don&#039;t be afraid&#034;.</p>
<p><strong>But I am afraid!</strong>  I&#039;m so small and the world is so big.  Situations that grown-ups can slough off seem overwhelming to me.  I&#039;m way too young to know what&#039;s going on.  I barely know how things work.  There&#039;s too much unknown.  And so the fear continues to grow.</p>
<p>Childhood is frightening, but I don&#039;t want to feel the fear!  Which means I&#039;ll cram as much of my fear as I can down into my shadow.  Unfortunately, at some point I&#039;m going to have to deal with that fear.  </p>
<p><strong>Either I travel down into the shadow directly and release it there, or else it will come at me in the world.</strong></p>
<p>I can repress the fear for only so long.  At some point, that fear will come up. I&#039;ll create situations that terrify me.  Or maybe the fear will seem to come out of nowhere.</p>
<p>And the whole time, the shadow just does the job it was meant to do.  It holds onto all the stuff I don&#039;t want to deal with.  It keeps all the power and emotion safe for me, and then gives it all back to me later in life. Of course, it often explodes in my face when it happens.</p>
<p>So this is the number two factor that leads to panic attacks; when all the fear that&#039;s been stuffed down into the shadow now comes to the surface.</p>
<p><strong>3. Telling Yourself Fear Stories</strong></p>
<p>Fear stories are an attempt to explain the fear.  Rather than simply feeling our fears and releasing them, instead we get stuck trying to rationalize those fears.  </p>
