Why You've Got Dry Skin

Dry skin is unpleasant and can result in other problems such as flaking and blemishes. In this article, I am going to go over a few factors that might be the reason behind your dry skin.

If you have dry skin or oily skin then I think it is safe to say you have used a moisturizer before. The concern here is that you could be using a moisturizer that isn't that great and you could possibly be using it in the wrong way. You should use an thick and creamy moisturizer that contains no alcohol or perfumes. You should use the moisturizer while your skin is still damp, after washing or taking a bath. Use the moisturizer before your skin dries out entirely but not while it is still entirely soaked and wipe away any surplus moisturizer that is left on your face.

Hot baths or showers may also be the cause of your dry skin. Hot water might wash the natural oils out of your skin making it too dry. You should minimize your time in baths and showers and use warm water instead of hot water.

When you are using products on your face, many rules apply for both dry and oily skin.

Washing your skin with soap causes it to dry up too. Cleanser strips away the skins essential skin oils. You need to find a cleanser that doesn't contain alcohol or any added perfumes. Any cleanser that leaves your skin feeling stretched and dry after use is no good. You should seek out cleansers that are labeled as “moisturizing”. An oil based facial cleanser is also one thing to keep an eye out for. If you suffer from dry skin, you need to avoid using any rough and aggressive scrubs to cleanse your skin, instead you should look for the more gentle cleansers.

Dry air absorbs moisture from our skin. The air is drier during the winter time which means that the skin can be even drier during this time of year. To fight this issue, you need to moisturize your skin more often. You can also use a humidifier to put some moisture into the air.

Exfoliating too regularly will cause your skin to dry out. If you have dry skin then you should only exfoliate every week or twice a week. Make sure you do not use any facial scrubs with "organic exfoliants" in them. This is because of to the fact that natural scrubs such as almond pieces have sharp edges and actually damage the skin. Synthetic exfoliating beads are better for your skin than natural exfoliating pieces.

If you are not properly hydrated then your skin can suffer. You do not need to go over the top and drink unnecessary amounts of water. This doesn't really minimize the dryness of the skin beyond a certain level. Just make sure that you're drinking plenty of fluids every single day to ensure that dehydration isn't the problem.

One more factor that could cause dry skin isn't in our control. It's age. As we get older, the number of sebaceous glands that release oil in the skin are reduced. The skins ability to keep hold of moisture is also reduced. There's basically nothing at all that we can do to change this so there is not much point thinking about it too much.
